If separate racial or ethnic groups actually existed, we would expect to find “trademark” alleles and other genetic features that are characteristic of a single group but not present in any others. The observation that the vast majority of the alleles were shared over multiple regions, or even throughout the entire world, points to the fundamental similarity of all people around the world-an idea that has been supported by many other studies (Figure 1B). In the Stanford study, over 92% of alleles were found in two or more regions, and almost half of the alleles studied were present in all seven major geographical regions. For instance, all humans have the same genes that code for hair: the different alleles are why hair comes in all types of colors and textures. Alleles are the different “flavors” of a gene. Research indicates that the concept of “five races” does, to an extent, describe the way human populations are distributed among the continents-but the lines between races are much more blurred than ancestry testing companies would have us believe (Figure 1B).Ī landmark 2002 study by Stanford scientists examined the question of human diversity by looking at the distribution across seven major geographical regions of 4,000 alleles. Compared to the general public’s enthusiasm for ancestry testing, the reaction from scientists has been considerably more lukewarm. New findings in genetics tear down old ideas about raceĮstimating our ancestral composition down to 0.1% seem to suggest that there are exact, categorical divisions between human populations. Furthermore, variation within a single region is large, and there is no uniform identity. However, variation between different regions is small, thus blurring the lines between populations. Human populations do roughly cluster into geographical regions. Additionally, individual races are thought to have a relatively uniform genetic identity. According to this view, variation between the races is large, and thus, the each race is a separate category. (A) The old concept of the “five races:” African, Asian, European, Native American, and Oceanian. Figure 1: ‘Race’ cannot be biologically defined due to genetic variation among human individuals and populations. Ancestry test kits are the new “it” item-and with their success is the tacit admission of our belief that our DNA can sort us into categories like the “ five races:” African, European, Asian, Oceania, and Native American (Figure 1A). Indeed, social media is teeming with blog posts, and even livestream videos, from excited customers bursting to broadcast their test results and their reactions. The soaring popularity of ancestry testing bespeaks a widespread perception that we can use these tests to dissect, delineate, and define our ancestral composition. For $99-around the price of a romantic dinner or a pair of Nikes-a customer can receive an analysis from 23andMe indicating that they are, for instance, 18.0% Native American, 65.1% European and 6.2% African. And it’s not just scientists who are excited about human genetics: widely affordable at-home ancestry test kits are now readily available from companies like 23andMe, Family Tree DNA, and Ancestry. Scientists have since tackled topics such as human migrations out of Africa and around the world. In 2003, scientists completed the Human Genome Project, making it finally possible to examine human ancestry with genetics. Race in the new era of human genetics research Race and racism are not new issues, but in today’s 21 st century Trump-era, discussions about race are distinct from those of the past in that they possess an entirely new dimension: that of genetics and DNA. However, the most recent months indicate the contrary: race remains an incendiary issue. Over the last decade, there have been hopes that the US has become a post-racial society, free of racial prejudice and discrimination. Undeniably, the topic of race-and racism-has gripped America and the world throughout. Minorities such as American Muslims and black Americans have expressed fears over racial relations under Trump. Trump’s travel ban, signed in late January 2017, initially affected about 90,000 people from seven Middle Eastern countries 87,000 of those banned were Muslims. Since the beginning of 2017, over 100 bomb threats have been made against Jewish community centers and schools. A rise in racial incidents ensued in the immediate aftermath of Trump’s victory in November 2016. Donald Trump’s election as the 45 th President of the United States has been marked by the brewing storms of racial conflicts.

And of course, one password should not be used across multiple accounts - that would create a single skeleton key that gets into all your data. This is why your passwords cannot be common or predictable. Hackers have plenty of automated tools that can try literally thousands of combinations every minute, and those combinations usually derive from lists of commonly used passwords, dictionary words, or perhaps details from your own life (like a pet’s name). Today it’s a necessary security tool, protecting your login credentials, passwords, and, in some cases, credit card numbers and more. Gone are the days when a password manager was just a nifty convenience. This is where password managers come in.Ī password manager is more than just a password keeper - it’s a secure vault in which you keep the keys to your wallet, your data, your entire digital life. (And we’ll add a hearty “Good job!” for taking your security seriously, when so many out there are still using weak, common passwords.) But where do you store all these passwords? You can’t possibly memorize all of them, and you don’t want a physical printout to exist anywhere. If you’re following password best practices - and you are, right? - then you’ve got dozens of extra-long, extra-complex passwords to remember, and you’re using a unique one for each account - no repeats. Learn everything you need to know about the security features and usability of password managers. Characters aren’t having conversations with each other so much as talking at one another without much regard for what was just said. Still, even if you’re just in it for the story and OK with the idea of being funneled down a linear path rather than a unique one that truly reflects the choices you’ve made, the quality of the script suffers due to the concessions made to accommodate these choices. Even if who lives and who dies is ultimately set in stone and unaffected by your decisions, in the moment you’re never quite sure whether a given character will make it through to see the next episode encounters with infamous characters from the show like Ramsay Snow and Cersei Lannister can be genuinely nerve-wracking as a result. Some are short-lived affairs as a swift death comes by surprise and a replacement Forrester is brought in to fill the gap. Over the course of six episodes, you’ll play as several different members of the Forrester clan as each tries to do their part to keep the family alive. All the Forresters can do in the aftermath is desperately try to stay afloat against the currents of change. Even if their fate is but a minor blip on the Westeros radar, their tale is still a harrowing one as rival House Whitehill attempts to use the event to seize control of the lucrative ironwood trade and wipe out the Forresters out for good. Telltale’s Game of Thrones focuses on the fallout of the infamous Red Wedding from the perspective of House Forrester, a little-known family that hasn’t made an appearance in the show but is mentioned briefly in the books. Plain and simple, you’re not going to get nearly the same level of quality in the storytelling here, but you do get a mildly interesting look at events not covered elsewhere. Going from playing an episode of the game to watching an episode of the show reveals a stark truth: the game is boring. Early episodes especially feel padded to the bursting point with filler. While the latter is tightly paced and gripping throughout, the former is slow, meandering and largely unexciting. An episode of the game doesn’t feel like an episode of the show. Well, it’s really going to depend on what you’re looking for from Game of Thrones. Maybe you’re a fan of the books or TV show who doesn’t feel like waiting until next year to get your fix, and you’re wondering whether or not the game is any good on that front. Maybe you’re fine with an experience that doesn’t diverge completely at every juncture, and just want a good story. After six episodes and dozens of hours, I had made hundreds of decisions, but only about three or four in the final two episodes truly changed anything about my experience.īut maybe that doesn’t matter to you. In the moment, it feels like you’re truly shaping the story with your influence, but one trip to YouTube to watch how else it could’ve played out is all it takes to shatter that feeling for good. They’re movies with light interactive elements in the form of dialogue options and quick-time events. Anyone who’s played one since The Walking Dead knows how they work: divergent choices funneled into convergent paths. It’s been that way with Telltale’s adventures for some time now, of course. Playing Game of Thrones feels like walking through a house of mirrors: at first glance, endless paths stretch in front of you - infinite, overwhelming possibility - but you quickly learn it’s nothing more than an illusion. That’s the question that opened my review of the first episode of Telltale’s Game of Thrones series nearly a year ago and it’s the question that lingered in my mind as I played each subsequent chapter. “Is it more important that your choices in a game matter, or that they feel like they matter?” The straylight value is defined 5as the “straylight parameter” s (unit, square degrees per steradian ). As a consequence, a large-angle, small-pupil straylight measurement could in fact be used to estimate the translucency in an individual. This angle is referred to as the crossing point in this article. Because of the large difference in angular dependence between the translucency component (independent of angle) and the remainder of the PSF (approximately dependent on angle −2), this component will dominate the PSF for larger angles, starting at an angle dependent on the individual and on the pupil size. Since straylight, as part of the whole PSF, is defined in a relative way (the total PSF is normalized to unity), this means that straylight increases as a result of translucency. So, this component becomes increasingly important with smaller pupils. The absolute value of this normal translucency straylight component can be assumed to be more or less independent of pupil size, as opposed to the fraction of light entering through the pupil itself. 4Pathologic translucency is often rather localized and not uniform over the whole eye wall, thus limiting its visual effectiveness. 4This normal translucency is weak compared with pathologic translucency, 13but is still significant in a functional sense, especially in blue eyes. The eye wall is partly translucent, adding a more or less isotropic (independent of angle) veil of light on the retina. Second, retinal straylight does not originate solely from the optical media. First, light-scattering may not be homogeneous over the pupil plane, also in normal eyes. However, there are several reasons to doubt the constancy of straylight with pupil size. 2 6 7 8 9 10The present study concerns only the normal eye. Straylight and its associated complaints have been documented to increase strongly with age 1 3 5as well as with other ocular conditions, such as cataract, corneal dystrophies, refractive surgery, and corneal edema. 4This effect of partial translucency may be more important in the case of small pupil sizes. Of special significance in the present study is that the eye wall is not completely opaque, but transmits part of the light falling on it. Moreover, light reflected more or less diffusely from the fundus also contributes to retinal straylight. Along the normal optical path, the cornea, crystalline lens, and vitreous may scatter light. Different structures in the eye have been identified as sources of retinal straylight. 1 2 3This not only leads to glare while driving at night, but also to other complaints such as haziness of vision. The scattered-light results in a veil of straylight over the retina, which in turn reduces the contrast of the retinal image. Measurement of straylight under large angle and small pupil conditions can be used for quantitative assessment of eye wall translucency.įor a discussion of these questions, it is important to realize that glare originates from the phenomenon of light-scattering in the eye’s optical media. In normal eyes, straylight values measured with photopic pupils are by approximation also valid for mesopic and scotopic pupils, such as in night driving. Pupil diameters decreased to photopic values under typical night-driving glare conditions.Ĭonclusions. For large scatter angles and small pupil diameters, eye wall translucency contributes significantly to straylight in a wavelength- and pigmentation-dependent manner. For natural pupils (between 2 and 7 mm diameter), straylight weakly depends on pupil diameter (within 0.2 log units). To estimate the order of magnitude of pupil contraction in the typical glare situation, pupil reflexes resulting from the sudden appearance of headlight-equivalent bright lights were recorded in three subjects in a laboratory environment. Data were analyzed to assess effects of (1) inhomogeneity of light-scattering over the pupil plane, (2) translucency of the eye wall, and (3) effects of the periphery of the lens. In the study of red-free light, a yellow-LED based system was used with the same five subjects for scattering angles of 3.5°, 10°, and 28°. Straylight was measured as a function of pupil diameter ranging from 1.3 to >8 mm in five normal subjects by using a white-light, CRT-based system for scattering angles of 3.5°, 7°, and 14°. In this study, the effects of pupil diameter and, especially in the case of small pupils, of eye wall translucency on the amount of retinal straylight were investigated. The typical disability glare is known to result from retinal straylight. Glare problems originating from bright lights are generally experienced more strongly at night. The goals of the new movement in Vienna were expressed by the literary critic Hermann Bahr in the first issue of the new journal begun by the group, called Ver Sacrum ("Sacred Spring"). The movement took its name from Munich Secession movement that was founded in 1892. The goals stated at the founding included establishing contact and an exchange of ideas with artists outside Austria, disputing artistic nationalism, renewing the decorative arts creating a "total art", that unified painting, architecture, and the decorative arts and, in particular, opposing the domination of the official Vienna Academy of the Arts, the Vienna Künstlerhaus, and official art salons, with its traditional orientation toward Historicism. The architect Otto Wagner joined the group shortly after it was founded. The Vienna Secession was founded on 3 April 1897 by artist Gustav Klimt, designer Koloman Moser, architects Josef Hoffmann and Joseph Maria Olbrich, Max Kurzweil, Wilhelm Bernatzik and others. In its current form, the Secession exhibition gallery is independently led and managed by artists. In 1905 the group itself split, when some of the most prominent members, including Klimt, Wagner, and Hoffmann, resigned in a dispute over priorities, but it continued to function, and still functions today, from its headquarters in the Secession Building. Their official magazine was called Ver Sacrum ( Sacred Spring, in Latin), which published highly stylised and influential works of graphic art. Their most influential architectural work was the Secession Building designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich as a venue for expositions of the group. They resigned from the Association of Austrian Artists in protest against its support for more traditional artistic styles. The Vienna Secession ( German: Wiener Secession also known as the Union of Austrian Artists, or Vereinigung Bildender Künstler Österreichs) is an art movement, closely related to Art Nouveau, that was formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian painters, graphic artists, sculptors and architects, including Josef Hoffman, Koloman Moser, Otto Wagner and Gustav Klimt.
